Concept Station to LumenRT Traffic Jam - Cars Build Up

Hey everybody.  I have looked through the forums and have not found a fix or even an issue like mine being resolved.

So, here's the deal.  I have a project that I have created in OpenRoads Concept Station.  Concept Station actually has LumenRT built into it so you can create animations and visualizations of your designed road.  It also creates a .lrt file so I can open it in standalone LumenRT.  My problem is that I have traffic running down the road but it has spots where the cars stop and get backed up.  Sometimes they go again after a couple seconds, sometimes they don't.  I have the min. and max. speeds set the same and the density down to 30% so in theory nothing should be slow enough to stop or collide.

I know a popular answer to the problem is to do a traffic simulation in Microstation and export that out, but all I have is my ConceptStation file and my LumenRT file.  Does anyone have a fix for this or am I going to have to individually place and animate cars?  I would really appreciate it if I could avoid that...

  • Hello,

I have had the same issue and have a rough idea why it might be doing this and how to fix this. So what I have noticed is when you set your min and max speeds cars can have speeds anywhere in that range. So that being said if you have one car going 35 mph and another one coming up behind them going 55 mph they are going to have to break. From there we know that it will cause a chain reaction and a traffic jam in that area. Does that all make sense? So the best solution if you don't want that to happen is to set your min and max speed to be the same. That is what I have found to help with this issue.

  • Thanks for replying Jonathan!  That does all make sense and I had the same idea.  I set both the min. and max speed to 45 mph.  It helped stop some of the instances of jamming, but not all of them.  For now, I guess I will just keep tweaking settings and re-running the traffic generation until maybe something works.
