MicroStation Connect (Beta to update 10) - UV problems when export to fbx - Exchange with other, not Bentley applications

Hi,

At this moment I still don't / can't use MicroStation Connect Edition for my High Quality (for lower / quick quality I use Luxology or LumenRT) professional visualisation work. The coming time I hope to bring some problems to the attention. This time I wan't to show some problems when I want to use a 3D model, made with Bentley products in other, (not Bentley) specialized software. The normal workflow, and this worked very good in pre-Connect, is to export the 3D model to fbx and import that in the other application. For Example:

The 3D model:

In SelectSeries 4 this method works very good.

Maxwell Render:

Unity:

Ss4 export to Unity

Now we do the same trick with Connect edition:

Maxwell Render:

Unity:

Like you can see, there is something strange with the UV mapping in the exported fbx files from MicroStation Connect Edition. This is a very serious problem. The lack of exporters to other render engines like Maxwell and a good fbx exporter (Maxwell and for example Unity) makes this version for a lot of serious Visualisation experts not usable.

I hoped this problem would go away by the time, but after a lot of years and versions of Connect, it still appears. I hope, that now I bring this to the attention, it will be solved (the coming time).

Regards Louis

  • Thank you very much for reporting this issue.

We have mentioned the same problems before. Exporting fbx in V8i works so fine. It´s very quick and without scaling problems. In Connect Edition there are serious problems with the size of the texture. It does not effect all materials. We are often exporting to Lumion to make some films, so we have the same problem like you. Exporting skp is a workaround, but it is so slow and it the files are so big! Setting different values for the stroke tolerance have no effect on the size? This should be checked again. Louis, have you got any experience with the exporting of .skp files?

It should be fixed  very soon.

    Hopefully

    Gerd

  • Hi Gerd,

    Thank you for you're reply.

Exporting to .skp could be a a temporary workaround for small projects and in Unity. Maxwell unfortunately, doesn't support skp.
Unfortunately the models I usually work with are very big. If I try to export them to skp, MicroStation crashes (after a very long time of waiting). Using SelectSeries 4 (with fbx for Unity and the Maxwell Exporter) is much more efficient.

Regarding to the texture scale, it looks like it's not only the scale. You can see this in the last (Unity) image above.

    Regards Louis

  • Hi Louis,

in our case it´s just the scale. It´s up 1000 times too small, so you can not see any texture structure on it.

But anyway. This is a problem in Connect Edition. In V8i it works fine.

Hopefully someone from the bentley team should look after it, so that we will get rid of these timeconsuming bugs.

    Have a nice day

    Gerd
