If I want to quickly populate a design with materials from a palette, ideally I would like to display the palette (refer image) then drag and drop while always having the palette as a visual reference for mixing and matching. At the moment if I want to assign the material from this palette, I have to double click the image which takes me to the material editor then I hit the assign material button, then to see my collection of materials (all images displayed) I have to go back to in this case the metals palette......etc.etc.
I would like to be able to quickly drag and drop from the palette as shown in the image directly onto the material without entering the material editor.
I also think that it might be a good idea to have an option have to have the full palette toggled open or closed alongside the material editor, this would enable you to see different material settings while scanning the palette. I appreciate that this would take up a bit of screen estate.
