Well... Luxology was fun while it lasted.

Just playing with the new Vue Render engine in the latest Update - well done to the Viz team, this looks very promising.

Looks Like I am going to have to learn some new workflows...

Regards

Robert

PS Yes I still enjoy what Luxology is able to do. ;-)

  • Hi Robert,

Yes please test out the Vue render engine in Microstation and give us your feedback. We want as many people as possible to be pushing the render button.

If you want any further features added please submit them to the Microstation ideas forum and I would encourage everyone to vote them up to the top of the list.

    Thanks

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

I have not fully read all the documentation, but a workflow document/video would do wonders for adoption.

Often when training/assisting users I have found they have adopted poor workflows, and unintentionally hobble what the Bentley tool can actually do for them because they are treating the tool like its some other software they are already familiar with.

Has there been a SIG focussing on this particular interface?

  • Hi Robert,

I agree 100%, Jerry is working on youtube videos to present workflows and usage of the new render dialog. They will be either posted in this forum or in a blog. We did demonstrate some of the features in a SIG some time ago, but a lot has changed since then.

    Regards

    Paul

  • Cool. - Yes the NPR and relighting is new from the version I last saw.
Is there an NPR style editor?
Is there foundational documentation from Vue (I really benefitted from reading/understanding Modo's documentation over and above the Bentley info)
Are there particular settings in editing materials that are optimised for this engine?
Do Ambient and Flashbulb participate as lighting (in Luxology they did not)
Is Skydome a thing if we have an entire environment editor?

It may be worth separating out each engines specific settings in to separate dialogs, or at least disabling them in the current interface depending on which engine is selected for. Again, I have seen users pushing ambient through the roof, trying to brighten a luxology render. Too many options not enough filtering.

    Robert

  • Here is link to my YouTube channel I posted a couple of videos already one on relighting and the other on NPR hope this helps.

I will be posting more in the coming days ... stay tuned.

  • Thanks Jerry - interesting, but I have to ask; at the end of your video you suggest someone in our 'organization' buys at least one copy of Vue to use more features. Does this mean Microstation will use Vue as a rendering engine only and not employ it's additional features? In other words, to what extent is buying a copy of Vue a prerequisite to enjoying Vue's capabilities as Microstation's new/ replacement rendering engine. On that issue - will Luxology be removed at some point?

  • Hi Max,

The Atmosphere Editor in MicroStation will let you edit VUE Atmospheres to some extent but it will not allow you to create cloud layers for example. You can create custom atmospheres in VUE save them and use them in MicroStation. In addition MicroStation also supports drag and drop VUE material definitions into MicroStation's material Editor. I will post video to show this. We don't currently have a mechanism for you to create Ecosystem Materials in MicroStation however if you have a copy of VUE in house you could create the materials in VUE and then use these materials to render your scene in MicroStation.

Non Photo-Realistic Rendering (NPR) VUE lets you do much more customization than what's available in MicroStation and any NPR style you create in VUE can be used in MicroStation.

We make it really easy to export your scene to VUE you could for example export just your terrain or landscaping to VUE create custom Ecosystem materials save those MAT files and use them in MicroStation. Even though we may be adding more VUE features in later versions of MicroStation having a copy of VUE would also let you use features that we have not implemented yet. One other plus would be the ability to create your own LumenRT Objects including thumbnails I have show this many times in previous SIGs.

In the below rendering which was rendered in MicroStation all the plants, grasses, trees, and rocks are Ecosystem materials that I created in VUE.

    Cheers,

    Jerry
