Can I import OBJ with textures and save as DGN with textures embedded?

I have imported an OBJ file with textures into MicroStation CONNECT and saved it as a .dgn.  Everything looks good but I think the textures are still referencing the folder containing OBJ textures.  If I move the dgn to another machine and open the dgn then the textures are lost and only the mesh is displayed.  Also, if I rename or delete the folder containing the OBJ textures and open the DGN then the textures are lost.

Is there any way I can save the DGN so that the textures are embedded in the drawing so it's 'standalone' and can be shared with other users in different locations?

Any help is appreciated.

  • Hi Trevor,

Textures are not stored in DGN files. If you want to share with others you can use Packager to gather up all the textures it will also gather up all the reference files and other data such as IES lights. It will offer to create a .PZIP but you can change the name to be .ZIP anyone could then open it without MicroStation. Another note we will always look in the folder where the DGN files are for textures. After making the Packager file you can create a folder and copy all the textures and DGNs into it , zip that up and send it to someone that you want to share with and if they open file from that folder it will render with all the textures.

    Cheers,

  • Many thanks Jerry for your response.  I had hoped it was possible to have a 'standalone' DGN with everything embedded but as this isn't possible I can now use the method you describe for sharing these datasets.
