Lumenrt and Microstation Light sources

If anyone can help it would be appreciated, I have been experimenting with lighting a complex scene with Microstation and Lumenrt 15.

A microstation light source with a cone angle of 90 degrees is the maximum allowed, this appears in Lumenrt to equate to a cone angle of 45 degrees.

Although one can adjust intensity and on off of named light groups in LRT one cannot adjust the other characteristics as a group, it needs to be done individually which is not practical with a large number of lights.

It would be great is one could group lights in LRT and if the microstation lights where on a different level from LRT lights. (the attached file show the problem)PDF

  • Hello Martin,

    • There was a bug where when we selected light groups, only the first light was selected (instead of selecting all the lights in the group). So you could only change the settings of the first light in the group. This will be fixed in Update 16. So, you will now be able to change all the settings of all the lights in the light group in one go.
    • Possible workarounds :
      • Select lights one by one while pressing CTRL, when done selecting all the lights go to the properties panel and change setting. It will get applied to all the selected lights.
      • Go to the selection tool and draw a rectangle by maintaining left mouse button pressed and try to select all the lights at once. Since the lights are placed inside a building, the building might get selected instead but if you uses shift before drawing the rectangle it should be fine.

    Thank You.

  • Hi Pinky,

Thanks for getting back to me on this, I look forward to update 16. I have tried both of the workarounds you suggest with limited success for the following reasons, it is difficult to select multiple light sources even using the CTRL tab among other reasons, because the selected light doesn’t change colour. Dragging a box around them only works if all the other levels are turned off (I have over 100). It would be worthwhile all the trouble doing one of these things if I could then group the lights into single object for changing the characteristics and moving them, but this is not possible. Could you add a group function ?

I am looking forward to testing Omniverse and have, for the first time, created an i-model, can you let me know how to import it into Omniverse at some point.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi Martin,

In regards to making selections, you can get more control by using the Hierarchy panel and moving it to the other side. This keeps the Hierarchy panel it onscreen while using other tools. Through this panel you can select items from a list instead of graphically. This is often times easier although the interface is small and quite fiddly, but so is the rest of the LumenRT interface.

This short video shows the process I use. (For clarity keystrokes & mouse buttons are overlayed at the top of video)

    Hopefully this is helpful.

    Regards,
    Ron

  • Hi Ron,

Very many thanks for your excellent advice and mini tutorial, it has shown me many features of LumenRT that it didn’t know existed.
Pending the update 16 I will make another attempt at lighting my project.

    Best Wishes
