Good looking gravel on big surface?

I have a issue today (among many others ;)) that if I render a view the gravel becomes to look like a carpet.

Anybody that has any ideas on this? The material should be looking good independent of the view distance, so it should look good on close-ups and from far away. For fine materials as concrete it's not an issue, but when it comes to more coarse materials like this gravel it harder.

  • Daniel,
First thing that comes to mind is that the texture being used is a rather small one. I would suggest using a larger texture. Not necessarily a higher resolution, but a picture of a larger area. Many can be found on the web.
Adding another layer on a larger scale to your texture may add a feel of irregularity. Some dirt or a soft shade of something.
Use a bump map and give it a low value. This will suggest some height and take away the flatness.

Many free textures can be found here:

    http://www.freefoto.com/browse/33-00-0/Textures

If you quickly need to test if the images you downloaded are tileable (seamless when placed side by side), download a tool called TextureDiscovery. It's a free gem and it can be found here:
    http://www.texturemaker.com/download.php .

Another option would be to buy a proffesional texture CD, like from http://www.marlinstudios.com or http://www.arroway-textures.com/. Of course you should try the free options first.

  • ...Or simply create a procedural material, and never worry about repeting patterns.

  • I'm with Kurt on this one.  Try mixing a couple different procedurals to see what you can come up with.  The ground on this is my take on some quick procedural gravel.

  • yes - mixing different procedurals is the way to go to make it look natural and still render very fast.

  • Hi, sorry for my delayed answers. But I can't get the results as you get using procedurals? Are you using SS3? From what I understand this is improved in SS3. If that's the case I'll just have to wait for SS3 to come out from it's beta stage.
