I have a issue today (among many others ;)) that if I render a view the gravel becomes to look like a carpet.
Anybody that has any ideas on this? The material should be looking good independent of the view distance, so it should look good on close-ups and from far away. For fine materials as concrete it's not an issue, but when it comes to more coarse materials like this gravel it harder.
Hi, sorry for my delayed answers. But I can't get the results as you get using procedurals? Are you using SS3? From what I understand this is improved in SS3. If that's the case I'll just have to wait for SS3 to come out from it's beta stage.

Did some testing now in SS3 and the result is promising. Think I actually now has a result that is good enough.
What need to be considered is that the area that is filled with gravel many times is between 2500m2 to 375000m2.
Attach a sample of a test file.
Thanks all for your help!
And a close up
there are improvements to procedurals in SS3, this is why I removed my material example (made with SS3) previously posted in this thread. Since you now are using SS3 I will re-post my example here:
no displacement, only bump - and it renders very fast. Can be improved to look more natural by mixing more procedural channels, but this is just a quick and easy test....
