delivered xfrog trees?

Hey Everyone,

I was under the impression that there were some xfrog trees delivered with Microstation.  Can't seem to find them.  I started pulling some of the free ones from xfrog but I figured I would ask.

Regarding the trees I have to put in a ton of these things with my render.  Any suggestions for decreasing rendering times?  I have already changed the render settings to not render outside of the view.  Is there any downfall to doing this?

Thanks,

J

  • Hi J,

When you installed MicroStation, did you also download the visualisation content?

The best way to place trees is to place them as shared cells. Don't use to many unique cells, because that makes the render times increase (a copy of a shared cell is much faster then a copy of an element).

  • Thanks Louis.  I'm assuming that I didn't download the visualization content.

  • Location (WinXP)

In the Documents and Settings folder of your pc check the 'All Users' part. Browse to '\Application Data\Bentley\'. You will find a folder called 'SharedContent' and that is where you can find the Xfrog sample trees. It only comes with version SS3 and later. Earlier versions need to download seperate. Perhaps you must have 'Display hidden files and folders' activated in your pc settings.

    Outside view

'Ignore elements outside view' has pros and cons.

Pro; It can be a big memory/time saver.

Con; some things not showing when they should. So take a really good look at shadows and reflections. Here is what to be aware of. Imagine the camera standing under a huge tree. You're in the shade of it, overviewing the glass office facade you modeled. The sun is setting behind you, casting a long shadow on the ground before you and on part of the construction. Some leaves are in the corner of your view. Then you move the camera a few steps toward the construction away from the tree until you are no longer standing underneath the tree. Now the tree is "outside of view" (range) and the shadow disappears. Even if it does show up in your view with Smooth Shadow, Luxology just ignores it. The reflections of the tree that you saw in the windows are also suddenly gone.

    Speed

Go easy on displacement maps. It consumes a lot during render time.

    Good luck
