Barmenus - Positive Comments:

Supports true multi-level menu branching, which provides a one-to-many-to-many relationship(just like the MicroStation menu bar!).

Can be used simultaneously to organize menus into logical categories (such as a project menu and a discipline menu) by copying barmenu.ma as _barmenu.ma (or whatever).

The source for a barmenu can be created and maintained in a spreadsheet so tabular documentation can be printed.

The source spreadsheet is used to back-check level usage using our proprietry software application. This provides full-circle QC: the spreadsheet creates the menu which controls the placement of objects, then the spreadsheet is used to check the level objects are on.

Facilitates easier administration of design groups...where each group can use thier own barmenus and sub-barmenus for specific tasks.

Maximum control over groupings. 100% user configurable.

Create in any text editor....but watch for unwanted spaces and tabs that some editors may create.

Can also be created with macros or Visual Basic.

You can make MDF files read only via NT so users can't edit them.

It's configuration simplicity

MDF files can be edited in MS Word and then password protected.

All hail Bill Steinbock!

Barmenus - Weaknesses:

100% user configurable. If you can fix it; someone else can break it!

It's inability to show at a glance what the current setting is and click on the setting again without having to go thru a set of pulldowns.

The Settings Manager - Positive Comments:

Best way to learn all possible settings appropriate for a drafted element.

If you are tasked with creating drafting standards, look at each one of the dialog boxes for a complete idea of possible settings to assign and pay close attention to the scale feature.

Compactness and configurability

The ability to see a glance what the current item is and select it again if need be.

The Settings Manager - Weaknesses:

Is a one-to-many relationship, which is VERY cumbersome on large project menus.

Only one settings manager dialogue can be used at one time.

The STB file works only with the Settings Manager and nothing else.

Too few choice points - You only have a group list and a component list. For some tasks, one or both of these lists may get very long; requiring a lot of scrolling.

Binary data files

The inability to copy items from one group to another.

When exporting the STG files - the resulting text files are too "wordy".

When importing text files, the results can be "buggy".

If there are too many groups or components, it may become unproductive.

The ideal would be the GUI of Settings Manager, with the option of a submenu under the item AND with the ASCII data file structure of
barmenus!
