Reference not displayed

 Product:MicroStation
 Version:V8, XM, V8i, CONNECT
 Environment:N\A
 Area:Reference
 Subarea:N\A

Problem Description

Sometimes, when a reference is attached, it does not display, cannot be found in the master file view, or only displays partially. Also, it may behave differently when zooming, elements disappear and reappear when zooming in and out. When opened directly or exchanging out to the reference, the elements are all correctly displayed

Reason

One reason why this might occur is because, occasionally, (either intentionally or unintentionally) a 2D Model is attached to a 3D Sheet Model and there is a Z value assigned to the reference (to which the user was unaware). If this Z value is too large, the reference may not display.
Note: This could also occur when attaching a 2D Model to a 3D Design Model.

Steps to Resolve

Option 1

  1. Create a new 2D Sheet Model
  2. Attach the reference to the new 2D Sheet Model
  3. Fit the View

Option 2

  1. Open the References dialog in the model (3D Sheet) where the reference is not displayed
  2. Select/highlight the reference in question
  3. Along the bottom of the References dialog there should be 3 boxes, Offset X, Y and Z
  4. Note the Z value (see Image 1 below, no reference in view)
  5. If Z value is excessively large (like Image 1), change it to a smaller value
  6. Input a value of zero for example, and fit the view
  7. Reference will appear as shown in Image 2
