How to open, import and reference GIS files

This includes SHP, MIF/MID and TAB file formats.

Steps to Accomplish

To Open a GIS File


  1. Go to: File > Open
    The Open dialog opens
  2. To change the filter, select “Shapefiles (*.shp),” “MIF/MID Files (*.mif),” or “TAB Files (*.tab)” from the Files of type list
  3. (Optional) To select a different source disk drive or directory, choose the desired drive or directory from the Look in list
  4. Select the desired file
  5. Click Open

To Import a GIS File


  1. Go to: File > Import > CAD Files
    The Import dialog opens
  2. To change the filter, select “Shapefiles (*.shp),” “MIF/MID Files (*.mif),” or “TAB Files (*.tab)” from the Files of type list
  3. (Optional) To select a different source disk drive or directory, choose the desired drive or directory from the Look in list
  4. Select the desired file
  5. Click Open

To Attach a GIS File as a Reference 


  1. Go to: File > References
    The References dialog opens
  2. Choose Tools > Attach
    The Attach Reference dialog opens
  3. To change the filter, select “Shapefiles (*.shp),” “MIF/MID Files (*.mif),” or “TAB Files (*.tab)” from the Files of type: list
  4. (Optional) To select a different source disk drive or directory, choose the desired drive or directory from the Look in list
  5. Select the desired file
  6. Click Open
    The Reference Attachment Settings dialog opens
  7. In the Reference Attachment Settings dialog's Orientation list box, select the desired option
  8. Click OK
