Background

From time to time in a design file you may have trouble with certain tools and functions not working or working erratically. The file is not necessarily corrupted as it open in MicroStation but it is in fact not displaying consistent behavior. Replacing the design file header or placing the graphic in another file may help resolve this issue.

Steps to Accomplish

Option 1 Reference and merge the file into a new design file

Start a new file using the same settings (working units, etc.)
Attach the old file as a reference to the new file
During attachment process, set Nesting to "Copy Attachments" (v8), set the nest depth to 1 to get the reference attachments (if any)
Highlight original file reference attachment, go to Tools > "Merge to Master" within the reference dialog
Select data point inside view window

6. Click on Ok button (this dialog can be dismissed permanently by checking the "Do no display again" check box

This will merge the reference file into the new file and replace the original file header with the new header from this file

Option 2 Fence the elements out to a new design file

Place a fence around all elements (set the fence mode to "Inside").
Go to Key-in window, key-in "FF=" (enter); "Save Fence Contents" dialog will open
Select a folder location and give it a name, then place a data point to accept and it will process. This will place the elements in a new design file.

These methods may or may not work, but have high success rates for
unknown problems or unordinary behavior.

Notes:
-Will effectively replace the design header.
-The down side is the references (if any) will need to be reattached.R

REPEAT ABOVE STEPS ON THE INDIVIDUAL REFERENCE ATTACHMENTS
Problem data could be inside any reference attached. Try turning off all
reference and then turn on one at a time until the error reports. Then
run the above steps on the reference file individually to attempt to
clear the problem.

Problem

Things to try that may correct strange problems or errors within files
If performing a task and getting a error(s), here is some things can be
done to try to correct the data.

Examples of odd behavior:
-System Fault 5 with no MDL aborts
-Strange appearance when 3D model or scene when rendered (solid appears
to be inside out, etc.)
-The 3D model looks physically different when using a particular
rendering mode.

Solution

These methods may or may not work, but have high success rates for

REFERENCE AND MERGE THE FILE INTO A NEW DESIGN FILE

2. Attach the old file as a reference to the new file
3. During attachment process, set Nesting to "Copy Attachments" (v8),
set the nest depth to 1 to get the reference attachments (if any)
4. Highlight original file reference attachment, go to Tools > "Merge to
Master" within the reference dialog.

Notes:
-Will effectively replace the design header.
-Fencing a file (refer to steps for fencing a file, above) will create a
new file with same settings as the original, so fencing a blank area of
the original file, will produce a new, blank file, and maintain the
original file settings)

REPAIR THE FILE IN EDG (if familiar with it, and is only available in
V7).

Notes:
It is important to know how to use EDG. Certain commands can cause
irreversible changes on the file that may destroy the data.

REPEAT ABOVE STEPS ON THE INDIVIDUAL REFERENCE ATTACHMENTS
Problem data could be inside any reference attached. Try turning off all
reference and then turn on one at a time until the error reports. Then
run the above steps on the reference file individually to attempt to
clear the problem.
