Why does the Dimension Line position change when I modify a dimensions Extension Line?
Background
The Dimension Line controls the location of the placed dimensions and by default the a Dimension Styles option ‘Relative Dimension Line‘ is turned off. When set this way if elements are moved the Dimension Line remains in its location but the dimensions Extension Lines increase/decrease in length.
With this option turned on when the dimension are placed then the Dimension Line will stay relative to the
FIRST
Extension Line such that if the
FIRST
dimensioned element moves the Extension Line will remain constant re-positioning the Dimension Line. If the
Second
element moves the Dimension Line will remain and the dimensions Extension Lines will increase/decrease.
When using the Modify tool to modify a Dimension Extension Line with the ‘Relative Dimension Line’ off then it is possible to Increase/decrease the Dimension Extensions lengths and the Dimension will not move.
Problem
When using the Modify tool to modify a dimension Extension Line with the ‘Relative Dimension Line’ on, then if the FIRST dimension Extension Line position is altered its length is maintained and thus the Dimension Line is moved to a new location. If the SECOND Extension Line position is altered its length will increase/decrease without moving the Dimension Line.
Solution
Having modified the position of the FIRST dimension Extension Line with the ‘Relative Dimension Line’ on, which relocated the Dimension Line, use the Modify tool to re position the Dimension Line.
Note: You could also modify the Dimension Style turning off the ‘Relative Dimension Line’ but beware this could propagate throughout the design and any other design that uses this Dimension Style depending on what is selected when saving the Dimension Style change
