Create and configure CONNECT Seed user preference files (UPF XML)

      Environment: N\A
      Area: Configuration
      Subarea: User Preferences

How to create and configure CONNECT Edition User Preference Seed files (UPF XML)

    Background Information

In some rare cases, such as a power outage or a crash, MicroStation may refuse to restart correctly, or either crash or display an error message when opening a file. In these cases, resetting the MicroStation to factory defaults may solve the problem. However, it is always very annoying that your own presets are lost and you have to reset everything again and, in some cases, you do not even know what you had set up a long time ago. Therefore, it is advisable to be prepared for such a case as a precaution and to set up seed files with the desired default settings beforehand. For these seed files, however, it is strongly recommended to start with new "unloaded" user preference files in order to avoid later problems or not to inherit existing problems. Therefore, the current setting files should be removed first and new user preference files set up according to their own needs and saved and set up for later than seed files.

    Required steps

    1. Remove current user preference files

Option 1: Manually remove user preference files:

    1. Close MicroStation

    2. Description of "Open folder with active user preferences (UPF, XML) in Windows Explorer"

    3. Remove all "personal" files of the current user (or move them to a self-made backup folder). Which files are affected exactly can be read in the following description: "What is stored in user preference settings file (UPF) and XML files?"

    Option 2: Reset automatic:

    1. Close MicroStation

    2. Optional: Description of "Open folder with the active user preferences (UPF, XML) in Windows Explorer" to be able to copy all the user name files of the current user into a self-created backup folder. Which files are affected exactly can be read in the following description: "What is stored in user preference settings file (UPF) and XML files?"

    3. Description of "Reset MicroStation to factory settings (UPF + XML)"

    2. Reset user preferences Set up your preferences according to your needs.

Which settings are mainly affected by this can be read in the following description: "What is stored in the user preference settings file (UPF) and XML files?"

    3. Save user preferences

    1. Close MicroStation

2.Description of "Open folder with active user preferences (UPF, XML) in Windows Explorer"

    3. Copy all the user name files of the current user into a self-created backup folder and rename them to desired seed file names. Which files are affected can be found in the following description: CONNECT variables for UPF and XML user preference files

    4. Configure seed files

Seed files are set via the following configuration variables: (menu item: "Workspace"> "Configuration")

MS_BUTTONMENUSEED File containing predefined key assignments. This file sets the key mappings if the file specified in MS_BUTTONMENU is not found.

MS_DOCKINGPREFSEED Path of an XML file for default dialog docking presets.

MS_EXPLORERSETTINGSSEED Explorer user settings seed file that is copied when you create a new Explorer user settings file.

MS_FKEYMNUSEED File containing predefined function key assignments. This file sets the function key mappings if the file specified in MS_FKEYMNU is not found.

MS_GROUPPANELPREFSEED Path of an XML file with the default group range preset.

MS_INPUT_CONFIGXMLSEED File containing predefined touch gesture assignments. This file sets the touch gesture mappings if the file specified in MS_INPUT_CONFIGXML is not found.

MS_KEYBOARDSHORTCUTSSEED File containing the predefined keyboard shortcuts. This file sets the keyboard shortcuts if the file specified in MS_KEYBOARDSHORTCUTS is not found.

MS_PERSONALDGNLIBSEED Standard seed file for creating the personal dgnlib file.

MS_RIBBONPREFSSEED The name of the file specified by MS_RIBBONPREFS as a seed file does not exist.

MS_TASKDIALOGPREFSEED Path of an XML file with default preferences for the Task Navigation dialog.

MS_USERPREFSEED Name of the seed file used to create the user preference resource file.

    5. In case of problems the MicroStation

So if you find any unexplainable issues in the future, you could delete your UPF / XML files or automatically reset them, and get your own preferences back.

To delete these user preference files, do the following: "Remove current user preference files"
