Deprecation of Google Earth integration in MicroStation

Dear Valued Bentley User,

As part of our MicroStation 2023 release, we are working diligently to streamline our product features to help you advance in your work and improve your user experience. To achieve this goal, Bentley has, made the difficult decision to end support of Google Earth Integration in MicroStation. The integration of Google Earth with MicroStation relied on an API provided by the Google Earth application and was discontinued by Google a while ago. Although we kept the tools available for several years, we’ve made the decision to remove this tool since most of them now have suitable replacements.

It’s important to note that MicroStation 2023 supports side-by-side installation, which makes it possible to install a prior version of MicroStation to use the Google Earth tools if necessary. In addition, we understand that many of you may still have projects that require the use of Google Earth Integration. Therefore, we’ve outlined different tools for you below to continue your work.

Bing Maps

We now provide Bing Maps imagery directly in MicroStation. Once enabled, the imagery will position itself automatically and stream in as the user pans and zooms. As a result, this tool replaces the Capture Google Earth Image tool, which took a screenshot of the Google Earth view as an attached image in MicroStation. It required careful setup of the view in Google Earth and only covered one view extent.

With this change, users will no longer be able to synchronize the views of both applications previously available through Google Earth’s Synchronize and Follow view. However, with Bing Maps images directly in MicroStation, the imagery will position itself automatically when enabled and will stream in as you pan and zoom.

Import kml/kmz

A new kml import tool has been developed to replace the previous implementation, it is for now an on-demand technology preview.

Additionally, it’s important to note that the play camera animation in Google Earth is no longer available. However, many tools are still present and unchanged including the Define Placemark Monument, Export to Google Earth, and Open Location in Google Maps.
