See image of  example error message below:

Explanation

MicroStation needs a User Configuration File (ucf) in order to start. When this message appears, it cannot find the ucf file it is looking for in the path given in the error.

For more information on the user configuration file, see MicroStation Help > Contents tab > Setting Up Projects > Workspaces > Workspace Fundamentals

How to Avoid

Option 1

  1. Search the computer using Windows Explorer for the .ucf, in this example, untitled.ucf
  2. Place the ucf into the path specified in the error message
  3. Start MicroStation again

Option 2

  1. Browse to the folder path specified in the error message (if the path in the message does not exist, create it)
  2. Create a new ucf using the name given in the error message (in this case untitled.ucf)
  3. To create a new ucf, in the folder path from step 1, right click and choose 'New'
  4. From the pop out menu, choose 'Text Document'
  5. The new file appears, enter the correct name (ucf name given in error message)
  6. In the file name, replace the .txt extension with .ucf
  7. Start MicroStation

 Option 3

MicroStation needs access to the folder where the ucf file is stored. When browsing to open the folder in Windows Explorer, if access to the folder is restricted, a warning message will appear saying something like the following: "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bentley\MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries)\WorkSpace\....is not accessible. Access is denied."  See image below showing an example of this:

To try and resolve, have the IT department grant access to this location and try starting MicroStation once more.
