Opening the same file between two different versions of MicroStation and the levels that are displayed are not consistent.
In the Bentley DGN design file format, the active file and all reference files have unique level masks; level masks can be either name or ID-based. Name-based masks were invented to avoid the problem of ID shift which sometime resulted in unstable level display when deleting and creating new levels. Although name-based masks are superior, in order to support older versions of MicroStation (e.g. 2004 ed) which do not support named-based masks, both anID-based and name-based mask exist.
Beginning with MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3) Update 2, the name-based mask is used in all cases save for when the ID-based mask save time is newer than the name-based mask. In most cases, this will result in stable view display across all versions; however in the case where view display is altered in an ID-based version (e.g. 2004 ed) and settings saved, the view display could be different between versions. Ideally, projects would be done in one version of MicroStation, but it’s understood this cannot always be true. As such, the following steps should help users make the right decisions when working in a multi-version project.
Lastly, there was a bug -#3986- which concerns cases in which view display was changed and settings saved multiple times in a single session. This too could create view display instability, but this time in versions which supported thenamed-based mask. This bug was fixed in MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3) Update 2. The remediation is the same as the previous case and is found in the following steps.
To correct the files so they display correctly in MicroStation V8i SELECTseries 3 Update 2 08.11.09.459 and above, please follow the below steps.
