Using MicroStation Plot Driver to create and convert Printer Driver Configuration files

      Product: MicroStation
      Version: All
      Environment: N\A
      Area: Printing
      Subarea: Driver/PDF

    Problem

The Printer Driver Configuration (.pltcfg) format, introduced in MicroStation version 8.9.3, eliminates the difficult and often error-prone task of manually editing .plt files in a standard text editor. The format provides a graphical user interface that displays all available printer driver configuration properties in a logical arrangement. The process allows those properties to be modified without worrying about the file syntax.

    Solution

Users who want to utilize their existing (.plt) files to create a new (.pltcfg) file format without editing can use the Edit Printer Driver Configuration command. In the Print dialog, select a .pltcfg file in the Printer Driver section within the print dialog. Then select File-> Edit Printer Driver Configuration, illustrated in figure 1.

Next, in the Printer Driver Configuration dialog, select File-> OPEN. Then select the existing (.plt), which will be used as the template to create the new (.pltcfg) and select Open. The .plt will be loaded in read-only mode, because the Edit function does not support writing .plt files.

All customizations are written to the newly created Printer Driver Configuration (.pltcfg) file. For example, pen statements in the .plt are now converted to color maps, and weight stroke values are in the Weights Maps tab in the new .pltcfg file.

To complete the task, select File -> Save As in the Printer Driver Configuration dialog.

It is important to create a unique file name with a .pltcfg extension in the directory in which the new Printer Driver Configuration file (.pltcfg) is saved.

This file (.pltcfg) is created using the .plt customization records. The file can be loaded in the MicroStation Print dialog and should operate with the same functionality as in an existing .plt.
