Error or Warning Message

During installation of MicroStation an error occurs:

"Error 1402. Could not open key:
UNKNOWN\Components\xxxxx..xxx\xxxx.xxx.

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel"

Explanation

The error is not a MicroStation error. The error is caused by insufficient or incorrect permissions to that specific registry key or the parent container of the registry key. You'll need to set the permissions to full control on that key in order to install.

How to Avoid

You'll need to modify the Windows Registry

****READ FIRST. WARNING: USING THE REGISTRY EDITOR INCORRECTLY CAN CAUSE SERIOUS PROBLEMS AND MAY REQUIRE YOU TO REINSTALL WINDOWS. USE THE REGISTRY EDITOR AT YOUR OWN RISK. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/136393****

  1. Back up the registry before making any edits: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/back-up-the-registry
  2. Start > type: regedit in the search programs and files field > enter
  3. Browse through the registry and select the entry mentioned in the error message.
  4. Choose "Permissions..." from either the edit menu or by right-clicking on the registry key's parent directory.
  5. Click the "Advanced" button
  6. Select the Owner tab
  7. Under Change owner to: select Administrators (Group) and click Apply.
  8. Then select the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" check box and click Apply.
  9. Go to the Permissions tab, select the check box "Replace all child objects Permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" click apply. (Note that the wording maybe a slightly different depending on your operating system.)
