I am trying to open a network in the GIS window. Firstly, why does it require me to select a shapefile to base the link shape on? And what does true shape mean? Irrespective I give it a shapefile or not, it throws me this error

CUBE network file (.net) are by default stick networks with no real geometries. Therefore, they have to rely on a shapefile such as a polyline (link) shapefile to provide the network file with valid geometry which portrays real-world conditions, e.g. road curvatures. In short, true shape adopts the geographic features of a road or system of roads to give the network an accurate portrayal of the system's existing conditions.
