How to set-up a license server for serving CUBE 6 licenses?

Product(s):CUBE
Version(s):6.4.x
Area:Licensing

Background

CUBE 6.4 has two types of licenses (nodelocked and floating). Floating licenses can be activated on a computer, which can then act as a server to serve out license seats to other workstations. There are no special requirements for the server itself. Any regular physical machine can act as server. In this wiki, we will look at how to set-up a computer as a license server for CUBE 6. These steps may require administrator permissions on the server and would be helpful to have an IT technician go through the steps.

Solution

To set-up a computer as a license server, you can follow the steps below

  1. Run the CUBE 6.4 installer on the server. If you are only using the server for license hosting and not planning to use the software on the server, you can just install the license manager and skip other modules.

  2. After the installation, the license manager will open and prompt you to activate the floating license key. If there is already a license available on this computer, then this prompt will not appear. You would have to open the license manager and activate the floating license key.
  3. The user needs to make sure that the Citilabs license service (RLM.exe) has the necessary privileges to communicate with the workstations to serve out the license. To set-up the firewall rules on the license server:
    1. From the license manager, go to Menu >> Firewall..
    2. Set up the options as below

Note: If there are external network firewalls, then the user has to make sure that the program "C:\Program Files (x86)\Citilabs\Licensing\RLM.EXE" has privileges to communicate by all protocols through all ports.

This should complete the set-up on the license server. The rest of the steps below show how to set-up the license manager on the workstations (clients), to contact the license server.

  1. On the workstations, open the license manager and go to Menu >> Firewall...
  2. Set up the firewall rules as below.

Note: If there are external network firewalls, then the user has to make sure that the program "C:\Program Files (x86)\Citilabs\Licensing\RLM.EXE" has privileges to communicate by all protocols through all ports.
  3. After setting the firewall rules, open Menu >> License servers...
  4. Enter the name or ip address of the license server, where the floating license is activated. Leave the port number as 5053 and click Save.

  5. After the license manager refreshes, it should list all the licenses available on the license server.
