Centroids and centroid connectors serves as linkages for origin/destination point of travel for each traffic analysis zone. CUBE is capable of creating these elements in both its GIS and Network windows. This article will guide you how to create both centroids and centroid connectors in the Network and GIS windows.

Solution

1. Download the data and open the VPR in CUBE. Change the directory if it asks you to. The first half of the article will focus on the Network Window.

2. Here, we have a network of Cubetown, the associated TAZ file, coloration for nodes, links, and TAZs. The labels displayed are for the zones. You will notice that there are 25 zones but one is missing. We will create a new centroid and centroid connectors for this zone.

4. In this example, we have a zone with missing centroid and connectors (above image). Click on an existing centroid and copy its attributes (CTRL+C).

5. Pressing CTRL+V will close the existing centroid's attribute window and display a black cross-hair icon. This will allow you to create the new centroid node. Click in the middle of nodes 1221 and 1220.

6. Zone 13 is missing. So type in "13" or double-click it from the Current unused nodes box. Click OK to create the centroid.

7. Next, use the pointer tool and select an existing centroid connector and copy its attributes (CTRL+C).

8. Click on the Add Two-Way tool > draw connectors for links 1221-13 / 13-1221 and 1220-13 / 13-1220. After each connector is drawn, you need to click anywhere outside the new links to confirm the sketch. Click Save in the upper-left part of the CUBE screen to save the new changes.

9. Next, we will focus on completing tasks #1-8 in the GIS Window. In the Data Manager. click on Add Existing Workspace and find the geodatabase (.mdb) provided from the data > click on it and click Open. Double-click the NoBuild dataset from the Data Manager to open it in the GIS Window. If you wish, you can open the Zoning dataset in the same window for appearances.

Area:

Area:

Network Window

In the Data Manager. click on Add Existing Workspace and find the geodatabase provided from the data > click on it and click Open. Double-click the NoBuild dataset from the Data Manager to open it in the GIS Window. If you wish, you can open the Zoning dataset in the same window for appearances.

10. Pin the Feature Explorer on the right-side for ease of access during the next steps.

3. Before creating these elements, identify what the max number of zones you currently have and the starting non-zonal node number. The highest zone number is usually identified in the demographic/zone file(s) of your model or determined by another factor in your model, e.g. catalog key. You do not want to create new centroids with a non-zonal value.

4. In this example, we have a zone with missing centroid and connectors.

After each connector is drawn, you need to click anywhere outside the new link to confirm the sketch. Click Save in the upper-left part of the CUBE screen to save the new changes.
