How to generate a wave timeseries (Jonswap) in Sacs?

Dear All,

Can somebody help me with creating and analysing a random wave signal from a JONSWAP spectrum in SACS.

For this project a WTG foundation is to be designed. We would like to investigateif SACS is the software to be used for this.

Preferably input should be the parameters for the JONSWAP, and timeseries length. Model of Foundation and WTG is already in SACS.

And output is the nodal displacements, and element forces.

Many thanks .

  • Hi,

Definitely SACS can meet your requirement to perform random wave analysis from a designated wave spectrum. Reference can be found in SACS manual- wave response Chapter 2.5. And you can use sample file 06 in your sacs installation folder which includes run files for a random wave analysis in SACS

  • Hi,

regarding the sample file 06 in the sacs calculation, could you please explain why the “wave height” in the seainp-file is smaller than the “significant weight height” in the wvrinp-file?

Based on descriptions in the sacs manual, the “weight height” should be equal to the maximum wave height which likely occur during the random wave.

The maximum wave in the random wave analysis is 20.5 ft.

Is there an opportunity to prescribe the minimum Hmax in the random wave analysis?

How about when is it not possible to reach the Hmax in the random wave analysis using different seed values?

    Thanks in advance.
