Bend Design

Dear SACS user,

I want to design bends of pipeline in SACS this design will be used for lifting analysis.

How can I design it smoothly? Can I extract from Autopipe model? How?

  • We don't natively support pipe bends (or curved elements of any sort for that matter) but there are a few options available to you for modeling these types of elements.

    1. Model the curved pipe as a series of short straight pipes
      1. Subdivide the curved pipe using joints so that the pipe bend is made up of straight elements. Fairly easy to model, but approximate.
    2. Model the curved pipe as a superelement
      1. Model the pipe bends as superelements (See manual superelement definition in the superelement manual). A bit more work to model, but exact closed form solutions of pipe bend models mean that the FEA analysis will be exact.
    3. Model the curved pipe as a FEA mesh of plates
      1. Mode the pipe bends using a plate mesh. Difficult to model, but less post-processing required if plate stress checks are acceptable.

We don't provide any post processing code check capabilities for curved elements in SACS so you would need to use another program or hand check the curved pipe based upon the member end forces.

What are you attempting to model? If you are using a the pipe bend as a lifting point, you may want to consider using a plate mesh anyways to model the local behavior of the element.
