Hi friends,
I defined the length of rod element as below:
~rod rod 508 32.5 -len 1000 -refine 50 -depanc 35 -wtplen 0.381 -emod 2.07e5 -fy 482.6 ,
The length is 1000 meters, but in the &status pipe report, the Max. distance is 1112.76, see below:
Distance Max Norm Axial Bend Shear Torsion

Why it is larger than the defined length of rod element.
Hi, I want to ask what does 508 and 32.5 stand for? is it the diameter and length?
Appreciate if you can clarify what the number is, and what unit is used.
Hi Naim,
The two values are Outer Diameter and Thickness. The units are in millimeters when dimensions are set to meters/metric tons and in inches when dimensions are set in feet/kips.
In the user's example, the dimensions are not mentioned, but they should be 508mm (outer diameter) and 32.5mm (thickness). I hope this is clear.
Thanks,
Rahul Kanotra
Dear Rahul, Thank you for the clarification. I think this is intended for risers, what if i want to model a chain? is the thickness should be input as 0? i'm trying to perform quasi dynamic analysis using rod element.
In that case, you can use thickness as 1/2diameter. So if you have a diameter of 200 mm your thickness would be 100mm.
Thanks
Rahul
