How to get started on MOSES: for a Barge Carrying three structures.

I have moses .CIF and .dat file of a barge.  I have MOSES advanced software.

On this barge I need to load need to load three bridge structures which connects various offshore platforms in a complex. I have SACS files of these three structures, and I have information about their weight and center of gravity.

I need to get following information for the loaded barge.

(1) Barge ballast configuration for transportation.

(2) Intact and Damage stability of loaded barge.

(3) Global barge longitudinal strength

(4) (a) Motions, Accelerations at barge center of flotation and cargo cog,  (b) RAOs (c)Transportation forces on the structure for seven wave directions 0,45,90... and give Hs and frequency.

I am a complete novice, started to work with MOSES from 21st August 2019.

I suppose I have to go through following steps  (1)  Converting cargo sacs files to MOSES .cif and .dat. (2) put loads on the cargo at their locations by calling some weight function. (3) then do stability analysis (4) then damage compartments one by one (5) then apply waves on the barge in various directions using jonswap model.

  • Hello Manish,

    Thank you for your question.

I am going to provide quick response to your questions.  The first set I will label with "a".  The second set I will label with "b".

1a)  Please see the &compartment and the &cmp_bal commands for help in designing a ballast arrangement.  You can find files that use these commands in the following directories.

    C:\Program Files\Bentley\Engineering\MOSES CONNECT Edition V11\hdesk\runs\tests\compart

    C:\Program Files\Bentley\Engineering\MOSES CONNECT Edition V11\hdesk\runs\samples\hystat

2a) Please see the m_stab files in the install directory.  The below location is what I am labeling as "install".

    C:\Program Files\Bentley\Engineering\MOSES CONNECT Edition V11\hdesk\runs\samples\install

3a) Please see the b_run file in the following directory.

    C:\Program Files\Bentley\Engineering\MOSES CONNECT Edition V11\hdesk\b_run

4a) Please use the install.cif file in the install directory.

1b) There are many files that convert from SACS to MOSES in the following directory.

    C:\Program Files\Bentley\Engineering\MOSES CONNECT Edition V11\hdesk\runs\tests\convert

2b) Please use the install.cif file mentioned in 4a above.

3b and 4b) Intact and damage stability can be done in the same file.  You can use the m_stab command twice in the same file.

5b) Please use the install.cif files mentioned in 4a.

The approach I would take is to do 1b and 2b first.  You can put an "&eofile" command after the "setup" command in install.cif.  This way you can confirm the position of the cargos and you can design the ballast arrangement.  Once you have the cargo positions and the ballast arrangement remove the "&eofile" command and do the motions and stability analysis.  You can add the "stab_ok" command to the install.cif file.  You can also add the "hstatic" section from the b_run file to the install.cif file for longitudinal strength.

Please have a review of the above.  Please try items 1b and 2b.  Let me know your questions.

    Cheers,

    Georgina Maldonado
