Can extension warning message

Hi,

I have a jacket model in which the joint cans (locally thickened) are modelled by segmented group.

Joint can extensions are defined correctly as per API (> 1/4D). When I run the joint check, I got warning message of can extension is -2.5cm. (See Figure 1)

So I did a bench mark. I introduced a new joint exactly at the can segment location and the warning at this joint is gone. (See Figure 2)

According to previous post by Bentley Colleague, the joint can shall be recognized by segmented groups (See Figure 3). But it seems to be NOT the case. Practically, introducing lots of joints just for the can is not favorable for the design and analysis.

Can somebody explain?

  • It looks like in figure 2 that you have created a new group with 1 segment to model the joint can. You will not get a warning message there because SACS uses segmented groups to define the can. Are  you sure that the can extension is correct? Have you tried using Joint > Automatic Design to check that the can extension meets the API minimum requirements?

Open the Automatic Joint Design dialog, select Include Selected joints and Joint 50A1, then select move brace, along chord in the Gap options. On the Can/Chord tab, select update segmented groups can lengths with API minimum requirements. Click apply. The can lengths will be updated to the minimum required length based upon the modeled geometry with offsets and you should not get any warning message.
