Damping Lid in MOSES

Hi,

When performing a docking analysis using an -obstacle option, I noticed a well known resonant effect, typical for potential theory analyses. In the confined gap between the vessel and the dock (obstacle), there comes to unrealistically high waves leading to high vessel responses. One way other hydrodynamic analysis programs deal with this problem is introducing a damping lid, which eliminates too high wave heights. Is there anything similar in MOSES?

Thank you,

Berislav

  • Hi Tusek,

    Thank you for your question.

The purpose of the lid is to introduce damping, as you have stated.  There are many ways to add damping in MOSES.  You can use the #drag attribute, or you can add plates or #plates, or you can add roll damping.

I understand that you are specifically looking for a lid.  I have done some short investigation on the "lid" concept.  I understand that it is a "one size fits all" concept.  The "one size fits all" approach is not inline with the MOSES workflow.  Our approach is to give the user control.

It could be that my understanding of the lid is incomplete.

Or course we can continue this discussion via email.  I believe you already have my email address.

Thank you for bringing up this subject.
