Multiframe Sections Library - wrong units

Something odd with the Sections Library.

I have a simple model with 50x50x6 L sections and was getting odd results (tiny stress).  Section properties for Area, kg/m, D, B are all as expected, but Ixx and Iyy are out by a mile.  Showing 19357201.880cm4 for Ixx.  It should be 19.35cm4.

Any idea what is going on?

  • Hi Andrew,

We do have some troubles with some of the MAXSURF Structure Libraries where units have been messed around.

You can open the Multiframe Structures Library from C:\Program Files\Bentley\Offshore\MAXSURF CONNECT Edition V22\Section Libraries and they should have the correct data.

Alternatively, follow these steps to recfiy the problem:

     - Open shape Editor and Open the Library you are using

     - Unlock the section group you are working with by going to the Sections Library window and Groups tab. Uncheck the Locked box.

    - Use Section | Place Library Section to place the Section you are using into the Section Shape window

    - Use Section | Replace in Library to over write the original section with a new section that has had the data recalculated.

Then save the library. Multiframe should notice the library has been changed and prompt you to reopen it.

  • Thanks James,

    So its not just me!

I was running V21.14, so downloaded V22 today, but for some reason I cant access>  "User does not have entitlement for the product", so am unable to run that version.  Ive posted a separate question for this.

I will try the Shape Window fix you suggested.  Ive just been defining new sections manually as I need them.

  • I should add that there are some other times where our calculations don't align with values presented in standards or manufacturer data. In those cases we do use the official data over our calculation. These differences are generally pretty small

However, these discrepancies are a units change issue and have come from libraries designed for use in MAXSURF where we aren't doing structural analysis, so Ixx type values aren't necessary.
