Equivalent seismic loads for code checks

Hello everyone,

In the seismic analysis using SACS, for code checks of elements and joints, I understand that there are two way to combine the seismic and static load:

  1. Generate dynamic load from seismic accelerations, then combine CQC with static load, i.e., “static +/- dynamic” or “static +/- 2*dynamic”;
  2. Generate equivalent seismic loads by several directions from accelerations using EQKLOD comment in –dyr.inp, and then combine them with static load.

My question is, is the second method suitable for element and code checks? Which conditions we can use this second method? How SACS generate equivalent seismic loads?

Thank you in advance,

Anthony
