Submarine Resistance

Hello,

I hope everyone is fine. I want to ask short question.

Can I calculate the resistance of a submarine going underwater with Maxsurf Resistance module?

For example, submarine height is 5 meters. If I make draft 30 meters, will it give me a result?

Best Regards.

  • Hi Mehmet,

Ship resistance is really complicated because of the wave making component to resistance. MAXSURF Resistance uses several different empirical formulas that calculate the wave making and skin friction components of the ship resistance and combine them into a total resistance.

A submerged submarine does not have a wave making component. So it is a much simpler situation.

I would recommend using Data | Calculate Areas in MAXSURF Modeler to calculate the areas (true and projected) for each set of surfaces that form the different shapes on the body (main hull, control surfaces etc) and then use known drag coefficients to calculate the resistance in Excel.

Its not often that we get to describe submarines as simple!
