Radius of gyration in Moses

In Moses, the radius of gyration to calculate cargo forces is about the barge center of rotation or the structure's center of rotation?

  • Hi Tinu,

I believe your question is about input.  If this is about the fr_fcargo command in the frequency response menu, please make it known.

This depends on your model.  Many times the cargo weight is input using the #weight command.  The syntax is "#weight *pt WT rx ry rz".  You should use the radius of gyration for the weight at the point designated with *pt.

There is also the option to model the cargo with beams and plates.  In that case MOSES will compute the radii of gyration for you.  That radii of gyration will be included when the barge system radii of gyration is reported with the "&status b_w" command.  The barge system includes the barge and cargo weight.

Other times the cargo weight is included with the definition of the barge system.   The barge system has included the cargo radii of gyration in calculating the system radii of gyration.  In that case the *pt will be the center of the barge system.

    I hope this helps.
