Damage Stability Calculation of a LPG Carrier using Maxsurf

Dear All

I need to check damage stability of a small LPG carrier of capacity around 350 MT using Maxsurf.
I am seeking experienced Naval Architects kind suggestion about where to start? Which I need to follow?
Is it IGC code or any other code? The LPG carrier is almost a barge type with LPG tank fitted above main deck. Please check picture below

Seeking everyone's advices

Thank you all

  • Hi Farhad,

Not sure what code applies to LPG - what was used in the existing T&S book?

For the deck tanks, all tanks need to be inside the "hull". So when we have deck tanks like these, we need to add surfaces above your deck that create more hull in which you can put tanks. In short, include the LPG tanks in your MAXSURF Modeler model so that you can define the volume as LPG tanks in Stability.

  • Hi James
Thanks for your reply,  Just for your information, The Classification detail of ship is as below

And Intact Stability Booklet is approved complying IMO 2008 IS code, IGC Code, MSC. 1/ Circ 1281 and Local administration. Please check below snap:

Another point is , For intact stability we usually model main hull only. In this LPG tanks are outside hull. So how shall I ingrate this with hull?
Any reference guideline will be much appreciated.

    Thanks a lot

    Regards
    Farhad

  • Its easy enough to do in MAXSURF, but if you are more comfortable in Rhino you can do it that way.

Rhino models can be tricky if you have a lot of surface trimming, but if you are clever with your surface layouts then you should be fine.

  • HI James,

Need your help again. Could you please check my model and advice if the LPG tank above deck is perfectly modelled?

Also advice me your your email address, so that I can share full model with you.

    Thanks Again

  • Hi Farhad,

Sorry - I can't share an email address.

Your model looks great from that one shot. Well done.

    It is really important that every time you load a new model into Stability you check your sections are formed correctly. To do this;

     - Go to the Body Plan view

     - Display | Show Single Section in Body Plan

     - Click in the inset box and use the arrow keys to move through and view each section

     - Confirm that all of the sections are shaped to the outside of your hull. Badly formed sections will make diagonal lines across your model.

Looking at your model - It looks like your LPG tanks might not go all the way to the ends of the tanks. Check your forward and aft limits.

Also - it looks like you don't have very many stations in your model (I can see in the bottom left of your screen you are using 66). Use Analysis | Recalculate Hull Sections to increase that to 100 Sections (medium).

    Regards,

    James
