Trimaran in MAXSURF Motions Advanced

Hello,

Can MAXSURF Motions advanced analyze trimaran? If the answer is yes, how can I do the analysis in MAXSURF Motions?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Silver,

MAXSURF Motions has 2 methods; Linear Strip Theory and Panel Method.

Panel methods can calculate motions on nearly all shaped vessel - however it isn't able to handle forward speed. For most trimarans, we wouldn't be interested of its performance at anchor.

Linear Strip Theory is suitable for each demi hull individually, but it can't account for the interactions between hull and demihulls. My understanding is that for a trimaran, these interactions become quite important.

So even if we did include capability to assess trimarans, the results wouldn't pick up the demihull interactions and would miss some of the key sensitivitty of trimaran design.

This PhD discusses analysing motions for trimarans and is using a volume of fluid CFS method: eprints.utas.edu.au/.../

  • Thanks James Clarkson.

I have done an analysis for a trimaran with Maxsurf Motion Advanced!

First of all, I took a hull from Maxsurf library and it is NPL Round Bilge 4a Model tri.msd. I create a trimesh by using Maxsurf Modeler advanced with this following setup.

Then, I have opeped the file in Maxsurf Motion advanced and run this case with the following setup:

    Analysis Type: Panel Method

Input window: Speed: 0 kn, 15kn and 25kn

    Headings: 0, 90 and 180

    Spectra: Jonswap

use this following settings for generate analysis panels:

But, after click on analysis it shows this error:   and after click on ok, then it shows  , to run this click on yes and it was doing its analysis.

After completing the analysis, I got a report. and in that report, I have found this:

    Now my question is:

    1. In the report section, why the vessel displacement is monohull?

    2. Is this procedure correct? If the answer is yes, then after clicking on "Solving Seakeeping Analysis", why it is showed "It appears as though your model is not valid for a Panel Method Analysis..."

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance!
