Here is a link to a document that discusses the engineering concepts used in the &equi -iter_max command.  The document explains how the warning message "Equilibrium did not converge in xxx iterations" is dependent on the stiffness of the system.  It presents how the stiffness of the system is used in the equilibrium calculations.  It also shows how a system stiffness can be too large; such that equilibrium cannot be found.
