    Floodable Length Error

    QUESTION:

I have been having problem when I try to run the floodable length criteria for my vessel at the displacement for more than 1800 tonnes. The displacement for our vessel is almost 5000 tonnes. What causes this error?

    ANSWER:

First, turn on the Margin Line icon to check if there is a problem with the defined Margin Line of the hull. Please see image below:

    margin line icon

Stability automatically calculates the position of the margin line 76mm below the deck edge when the hull is first read in. If necessary, the points on the margin line may be edited manually in the Margin Line Points window (the deck edge is automatically updated so that it is kept 76mm above the margin line). See Stability Manual page 279.

In this case the software identified the lower bow part as the deck, causing the margin line to extend to the middle of the bow part.

You may edit the margin line by deleting points from Window - Inputs - Margin Line Points. In this hull, the points after 72.599 can be deleted. After deleting some points, the margin line will now look like this:

After deleting the points, you may run the analysis again, then it will work.
