Acceleration on plate loads

Problem

I have applied plate pressure load in my SACS model. How can I apply acceleration on these loads?

Solution

You cannot apply accelerations to loads; you should use weights if you intend to use accelerations. You can use a surface weight (Weight > Surface > Surface Definition and Surface Weight) to apply an equivalent pressure to the same area and the apply an acceleration (Environment > Loading > Weight) to the weight. Note that the surface will distribute resulting loads to the beam elements which is a bit different than the plate pressure loads. Alternatively, you could use non-structural weight (Weight > Elements > Non-structural Weight) to distribute loads to the joints but would be a bit more tedious as you cannot use an equivalent pressure so you would need to calculate the effective weight for the plate.

See section 2.9.1.3 of the Seastate manual for more information on Surface Weights and section 2.9.1.7 for more information on non-structural weights.
