B31.8 Code Stress results on screen for 2 different allowable ratio

Hi all,

We are analysis piping system to ASME B31.8 Offshore (2012). Due to different material (Duplex SS & Ni625), we intent to limit the combined stress ratio allowable of the Duplex SS to 0.8 (as oppose to the code allowable 0.9*SMYS). The Ni625 material would still have the same 0.9 allowable ratio.

Is there a way in AutoPIPE for the code stress result screen to show 2 sets of criteria when it presents the stress color plot?

Thanks.

  • Hello Ipohkid18,

What 2 sets of criteria are you proposing be displayed on the color plot?
Please provide details on how you see this enhancement being applied to the program.

  • Hi,

Apologies. I should have made this clearer in the first place.

I intend to have the color to plot different ranges for different material The intended stress ratio is:

    • Duplex Stainless Steel (0.72-hoop, 0.8-longitudinal, 0.8-combined)
    • Ni625 (0.72-hoop, 0.8-longitudinal, 0.9-combined)

    Based on my understanding:

    • Although there is difference in the SMYS of both material, it should not matter as the color plot of code stress result is based off of the allowable stress (ratio*SMYS)
    • the allowable ratio (Tools-->Model Option-->Results) can be only set for 1 value each for hoop, longitudinal and combined.
    • Therefore, if I set 0.8 as the combined stress ratio limit, the stress plot for the Ni625 material might show red at areas where it should be accpetable (since Ni625 is allowed up to 0.9)

Is there an alternative way to achieve this?

    Thanks.

  • Hello MorganK,

At this time, AutoPIPE 11.02.00.08 and lower does not have the ability to manipulate the code factors based on material data as you have described above. Hoop, Long, and Comb. are global factors in this version.  I have logged a new Bentley Service Request for you and linked it to a new enhancement that has been logged:

Enhancement 795005:Add feature to apply hoop, longitudinal, combined stress factors to individual materials.

    Thank you for the suggestion.
