B31.3 LATEST CODE COMPLIANCE (September 2019)

It is September 2019. I understand that ASME B31.3:2018 was released some time ago?

My version of Autopipe is still giving a Code compliance statement to the 2016 version of the above Code.

As far as I can tell, this version of Autopipe Advanced is legal, licensed and up to date.

Is there something that I am missing?

  • Hello Lionel,

Please keep in mind that CAE development team is constantly updating the program based on users requests and industries acceptance. It is a considerable undertaking in both time and financial investment for programming, producing all background calculation in Mathcad, & QA&R testing for each new piping code added to AutoPIPE. Therefore, it may be sometime after a code publication date before it will appear in the program as an option, but it all starts with logging service ticket for the enhancement

To keep things in perspective, when was ASME B31.3 2018 actually released?

Typically code titles and actual publication dates can vary. In this case, according to ASME Webpage here. ASME B31.3 - 2018 was actually published in 2019, but no month was given. Let us consider other publication re-sellers, like Techstreet Store here, where it states it was Published, Aug 30,2019. Today is Sept 26, 2019. Therefore the publication is less than a month old.

It is never good practice to start development on a new code until after publication to ensure that an updated code is done properly. Sometimes, last minute changes are made to the code just before publication. The development team will be adding this code update in a near future release of the software.

All versions of AutoPIPE are, as you mentioned "legal, licensed, and up to date" at the time of release. In this case, the latest commercially available version of AutoPIPE Connect 12.01.00.10 was released on May 2019. As you can see this was well before the actual publish bate of the new code update (Aug 2019). Development on a new version of AutoPIPE stops will before the release date to ensure proper time for testing.

In conclusion, AutoPIPE has been rolling out 3-4 updates per year in an effort to kept the program up to date with new features (such as new code editions) providing that a number of users have requested a specific feature as an enhancement, and adequate time was allotted for development and testing before the next release date of the program. Again, there are a lot of T's and I's that need to be crossed and dotted with adding a new code update. It all starts with logging a service request asking for an enhancement. The more people requesting an specific enhancement, the quicker it will be added to the program. As an added benefit, user's who log Service Request are notified when their requested feature has been added to the program.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

  • The 2018 was issued on Aug 30, 2019. See page 3 of the Code. The 2018 edt was heavily belated. As a result, the 2020 edt will be skipped, and the 2022 will be the next. The cutoff would be March 31, 2021.

Also, bear in mind that a new code will become effective 6 months after issuance, so that would be the 1st of March 2020 for the 2018 edt. Hence, B31.3-2018 isnt effective yet. Therefore it would make no sense for the AP developers to have their software already working on the 2018 edt.
