Pipe Displacement and Pipe Force & Moments Output should be in the same direction (+ve/-ve) for same axis?

Hi,

i have question about the direction of force & moments.  The pipe force-moments output  will have same direction (whether positive or negative) as the pipe displacement at a node or not in Autopipe? i have checked and sometimes the direction between these two are not the same.  As what i understand, the force and displacement should be in the same direction.

  • Good Day to you Fifah,

It all depends on the direction of the segment and exposed cross section where the calculations are performed.

Please see the following AutoPIPE help section:
Help ribbon> Contents button> Contents Tab> Reference Information> Results Interpretation> Pipe Forces and Moments: Global Option.

You can perform this experiment yourself:

    1. Open WALKTHRU_Archive.APC example model
    2. Analyze the system
    3. Select node point  B02
    4. Results> Output report> enable only  "Limit results to highlighted points" and "Force and Moments" sub-report for GR load case only
    5. Review the results report
    6. Back inside AutoPIPE, reverse Segment B direction, Segment B anchor should have changed from B04 to B01.
    7. Again, analyze the system
    8. Select node point  B02-
    9. Results> Output report> enable only  "Limit results to highlighted points" and "Force and Moments" sub-report
    10. Compare reports:

Notice the values and the directions for each report. Displacement remain unchanged in both direction and magnitude. However, Forces and moments for each segment directions have changed but not their magnitudes.

Again, all depends on the segment direction and exposed face where calculations are performed.
