Seismic Static Analysis Vertical Factor

Where does the default value of 0.5 for vertical factor when performing adding static earthquake loads come from?

  • Greetings Kayla,

To start with unless otherwise told always assume that all AutoPIPE values shown in images are fictitious / made up and do not relate back to anything. They are just random numbers used as an example.

However when looking at default values used, the development team must assume a value, in this case it was set to 0.5. Users are encourage to research and evaluate what the default values should be for their specific project.

In light of better information, some codes will have a general rule that vertical seismic load could be 1/3-1/2 or higher of horizontal value.

Again, enter in a value that is correct for your project.
