AutoPIPE

Does AutoPIPE comply with the requirements of ASME B31.3 with regards to the crotch radius rx of tees, also the thickness of of the tee at the crotch radius Tc.

  • Hello John,

If you could please provide specific details why you believe AutoPIPE is incorrect.

According to ASME B31.3 2010, Tc and Rx are only shown for Tee type = Welded, Extruded Welded, Weld in Contour. According to the note 8,

    (8) If rx >1/8Db and Tc > 1.5Tbar, a flexibility characteristic of 4.4 Tbar / r2 may be used.

AutoPIPE gives the user the ability to select this option for when "Welded" or "Contour" types of tees are selected (screen shot of Tee dialog with option shown below:

    Consider crotch radius and thickness
This option must be checked in order for the program to consider applying the flexibility characteristic h = 4.4*T/r if the ANSI B16.9 tees meet the ASME B31.3 dimensional requirements as per Appendix D,

Furthermore, when Tee type = Extruded, the user must enter the Crotch radius, which is used directly in the calculation of H.

    Thanks for your time,
