I need to place 3 boots on a horizontal vessel. After placing one, a second instance seems to be allowed, but it overwrites/replaces the first one. So the result is only one boot, albeit in a new positon. Placing a nozzle works, except that one cannot place a cap onto it.
Any ideas on how to model this?

currently only 1 boot allowed, your approach is correct on adding additional boot as nozzle however the cap end problem cannot be solved that way. you may run a separate model modeling just the boot cylinder and cap(head).
