How do I perform an ASME Section VIII Div 1 / 2 or Appendix XI Flange Analysis in AutoPIPE?
Note: Must have a license for AutoPIPE Plus, Advance, or Nuclear to continue. AutoPIPE Standard does not have the ability to perform a Flange Analysis to ASME Section VIII Div. 1 / 2 or Appendix XI, see the following AutoPIPE help section: Help > Contents> Contents Tab> Getting Started > AutoPIPE V8i Standard vs Advanced vs Nuclear, for document about version and features.
1. Open existing AutoPIPE model WALKTHRU.DAT from one of the following locations:
A. C:\Bentley\AutoPIPE V8i SELECTseries\
B. C:\Bentley\AutoPIPE V8i SELECTseries\Examples\
2. Analyze the model. Analyze> Analyze ALL.
3. Select Tools> Flange Analysis.
4. Analysis Method = "ASME Section VIII, Division 1"
Note: not all flange types can be analyzed using ASME codes, see AutoPIPE help "Flange Check Result" for details.
5. Select the "Load" tab from the grid.
a. Set Load Combinations = "Gravity", press the TAB key
6. Select the "Flange" tab from the grid.
a. Set "Flange Material" = "SA/AS 1548-7-430A", press the TAB key
(note, for non-library data, select "NS" and enter the values in the respective fields)
b. Set "Flange/Bolt Dimensions" = "B16.5", press the TAB key
7. Select the "PIPE" tab from the grid.
a. Set "Pipe Material" = "SA/AS 1548-7-430A", press the TAB key
(note, for non-library data, select "NS" and enter the values in the respective fields
8. Select the "BOLTs" tab from the grid.
a. Set "Bolt Material" = "SA-193-B16-1", press the TAB key
(note, for non-library data, select "USER" and enter the values in the respective fields
9. Select the "Gasket" tab from the grid.
a. Accept all default settings as shown
10. Select the "Analysis" tab from the grid.
a. Place a check mark in the "Analyze" column for the flange to be analyzed.
b. Press the Analyze button in the top right corner of the dialog screen.
---------------------------Bentley AutoPIPE---------------------------Total number of flange analyzed : 1---------------------------OK ---------------------------
c. Press OK button.
d. Press "Show Report" button in upper right corner of dialog screen.
Finish by by pressing OK button in lower right corner of dialog screen. .
After the report appears, scroll down to the Results section for each flange, look for an * as the last chartacter. Example:
Radial Flange Stress, SR = 161.968 115.142 1.407*
Average Stress, (SH+SR)/2.0 = 150.616 115.142 1.308*
This * at the end of a line means that these calculation results have exceeded the calculated allowable, i.e. the flange has failed. Avoidance, review the report and code to see how this calculation is performed, adjust the Flange Analysis input values that go into calculating this value.
