For Rotating equipment, what is the equipment's local axis directions (i.e. Dx, Dy, Dz)?
When entering Rotating equipment
Type = Turbine or Compressor the following dialog is presented:
Type = Pump the following dialog is presented:
Type = User the following dialog is presented:
When entering some data into the dialog above, some are based on the Equipment's Local Axis. What exactly is the Equipment's local axis and how is it controlled?
Answer:
The equipment local axis is controlled by the equipment's Orientation, Shaft Axis, and Pedestal Axis settings.
For each new Equipment ID, the first time through this dialog, suggest entering the best values or 0.00 as needed for fields dependent the equipment's local coordinates (i.e. User's Allowable Forces and Moments) However, enter the correct orientation, Shaft Axis, Pedestal Axis, ensure that "Generate Report" options is enable, and then press the OK button to continue. Now, create an Output Report to include the "Equipment" sub-report (shown below):
Press the OK button to view the report. For each Equipment Id and Load case the Equipment Local Axis directional cosigns are printed, shown below:
The table shows the Equipment local axis based on the global coordinates axis and Right hand rule
Now knowing the Equipment Local Axis re-open the Rotating Equipment dialog, select the correct Equipment Id, and update any data as needed to correspond with the local axis (ex. the Allowable Forces and Moments according Equipment's Local Direction) :
Press OK button and view the report again to verify any updated information and results (ex. the Individual Forces & Moments at each nozzle are under / exceeds the allowable values that were updated) :
Note: If the Local Equipment axis is not in the correct orientation assumed by the user, modify the Shaft Axis direction and Pedestal Axis direction as needed.
