Can AutoPIPE correctly model and analyze the stresses created while piping is being pulled through a directional drilled bore hole underground?
The CAE development team does not have any recommended workflow for modeling a pipe being pulled through bore hole. This will be more of a dynamic problem i.e. the pipe is actually moving and is not restrained to remain in place. An approximation may however be made by defining soil properties that would describe the different stiffness values for the pipe/soil interaction. The tensile pull load on the pipe may be modeled as a static load acting on the end of the pipe that is being pulled. Any other loads that may act on the pipe during this process like soil weight acting on top of pipe, buoyancy forces, and frictional forces will need to be modeled in addition to defining the approximate soil stiffness values.
It seems that for such type of designs the software may need to perform large displacement analysis - which AutoPIPE is not capable of performing, or for that matter other pipe stress analysis applications.
