Problem:

How is shell length interpreted in AutoPIPE Vessel?

Solution:

Consider following example.

Consider following example.

The shell length is mentioned as 6000 mm.

Consider the left ellipsoidal head which has a flange length of 50 mm

Consider right head which also has a straight flange length of 50 mm

Execute the model to get the results.

Observe that the length of the barrel is composed of 2 parts, barrels with lengths 3000 and 2900 mm.

This is because the length of 6000 mm entered in shell length included the straight flange portions of the 2 heads (50+50=100mm), so shell length = 6000-100 = 5900 mm, this is how the lengths of shells are determined.

The reason the shells are composed of 2 sections 3000 and 2900 mm is because in the geometry tab the plate width for rolling of shell courses is set as default 3000 mm (can be changed by user to any other value but standard mill plate width is 3000mm) so first shell is 3000mm the other one is 5900-3000=2900 mm.
