    Problem:

How does AutoPIPE count license usage with remote access or shared server, (ex. Citrix Server)?

    Solution:

If a user remotely accesses a Bentley product over their internal network, usage will be shown from the accessed machine, i.e usercomp_xyz accesses user-comp_abc, usage will be registered on user-comp_abc. However, if a company uses a remote environment such as Citrix usage will be registered on the actual machine being used.

If a company does indeed use a remote environment (i.e. Citrix) but the accessed machine (user-comp_abc) is running AutoPIPE 24 hours a day. Therefore 24 hour usage of AutoPIPE licensing is charged on the account.

To correct this issue, please ensure users are completely logging out of the software when not in use. To assist with this scenario, using SES Licensing enabled versions of Bentley Software will allow use of License Alerting which will notify end users if they are about to trigger an overage.

    Questions:

Since the overage was counted against a machine (user-comp_xyz) that does not actually have or is using AutoPipe but is actually remoted into user-comp_abc and running the software on another computer (user-comp_abc), can we get this overage charge dropped?

Also moving forward can we not remote into our computers from another computer and use AutoPipe on the remote computer without an additional overage charge?

Maybe is there a way to create an exception for a particular laptop that is not running Autopipe but merely remoting into a computer that is running Autopipe?

    Answer:

Unfortunately No, a remote access of the machine will log usage as if it is running the product, therefor if Machine A is running the product and Machine B accesses it remotely this will still be considered a usage. If you would like to remote access a product it cannot already be running on the remoted machine. Best practice for using a remote machine for running Bentley software, when user is leaving for any reason, save all work and log off remote computer. Suggest that users not be logged in to remote computer if not actively using the software.
