Problem:

Does AutoPIPE calculate MAWP (Maximum Allowable Working Pressure)?

Solution:

As of April 2022, AutoPIPE does not calculate a pipes MAWP. This information should be readily available in project documentation outside of the program.

AutoPIPE has a calculation for and reports hoop stress results based on load case settings. If preference to use calculated MAWP value, consider performing an internet search on how to calculate a MAWP.  Otherwise one can easily find a MAWP of the current model by adding an additional Press / Temp load case, incrementally increase the pressure of that load case, and review results to find an acceptable level of stress. This should go without saying, but suggest to add a factor of safety to this pressure value and again add a new pressure temperature load case to see that these results are acceptable for your design.

If you are designing a Vessel recommend that complete that design with Bentley's AutoPIPE Vessel program. When the designer doesn’t know the maximum allowable pressure, then AutoPIPE Vessel is able to determine the maximum permissible pressure. By default, this maximum permissible pressure is used as the maximum allowable pressure. But if the designer knows the maximum allowable pressure then they can input this value and the program will use this value to determine the test pressure.
